In the second episode of Loki, titled "Breaking Brad," the main characters Loki, Mobius, and B-15 travel to 1977 London in their search for Sylvie, the variant Loki is desperate to find. Their goal is to track down X-5, who has now assumed the identity of a movie star named Brad Wolfe. X-5 has transformed his life after deciding to pursue an acting career instead of hunting for Sylvie. When Loki and Mobius finally locate X-5 at his movie premiere for the film Zaniac, they confront him and try to get information about Sylvie's whereabouts. However, X-5 proves to be uncooperative and taunts them, blaming Loki and Sylvie for all the issues they are facing. Despite their best efforts, Loki and Mobius struggle to extract the information they need from X-5.Meanwhile, tension builds between Loki and Sylvie as they reunite at an Oklahoma McDonald's. Loki is still skeptical about Sylvie's plan to free the timeline, believing it will lead to more harm than good. The complicated dynamic between the two variants is palpable, with their internal conflicts reflecting their individual views on the situation. Loki is torn between his desire to be a hero and Sylvie's determination to burn everything down and start anew.Throughout the episode, the secrets of the TVA and its employees gradually unravel. B-15, who used to prune Loki variants without hesitation, has transformed into someone who questions her previous actions and works to protect the branched timelines. X-5 himself has chosen to pursue a different life as an actor, rejecting his mission to find Sylvie. On the other hand, Mobius remains in denial about the truth and clings stubbornly to the TVA and his duties.Amidst these developments, the group discovers that Dox, a general responsible for bombing branched timelines, plans to wipe out millions of lives. Sylvie, fueled by her desire to put an end to the TVA's oppressive control, takes action alongside Loki and Mobius. Together, they attack Dox's base and manage to knock her out with a powerful pulse of magic. However, they are unable to prevent the majority of the timelines from being bombed, leading to devastation and despair. In a poignant final scene, Sylvie returns to her branched timeline, carrying He Who Remains' unique TemPad. The device holds significance and appears to be connected to Loki's time slipping, but its exact capabilities remain uncertain. As the episode concludes, the potential for further exploration and the resolution of mysteries surrounding Ravonna and Miss Minutes loom on the horizon.Overall, "Breaking Brad" offers a comfortable installment of Loki, bringing Loki and Mobius back together for charming time buddy cop antics. It showcases Loki's magic abilities, which are rarely seen at the TVA, and provides a new version of the Loki theme composed by Natalie Holt. The episode leaves us with a sense of picking up speed and promises a lot of potential for the rest of the season. Whether or not the show fulfills that potential remains to be seen.
