Gen V: Why is Cate returning erased memories?

In the episode "Jumanji" of Gen V, Cate, an empath who can erase memories, decides to return the memories she had previously blocked from her friends. She claims that she thought she was doing the right thing, but it is clear that she was under the influence of Dean Shetty and did not truly believe in her actions. Andre feels the most betrayed and loses all compassion for Cate, even as she collapses in front of them. Meanwhile, Emma retrieves her memories of Sam and they have a passionate reunion at a drive-in movie theater. As Cate passes out, the other supes realize that they have also collapsed and find themselves wandering through Cate's repressed memories. They encounter Soldier Boy, Cate's imaginary friend from childhood, who informs them of the rules of entering someone's mind. They discover that Cate was recruited by Shetty and had been erasing Luke's memories of Sam in exchange for compassion and pills to control her own powers. Cate's constant mind wipes had taken a toll on Luke and may have contributed to his unraveling. They also uncover unexpected revelations, such as Andre and Cate's previous relationship and Jordan helping Brink subdue a troubled Luke. In the midst of revisiting Marie's parents' murder, Marie confronts her younger sister who refuses to forgive her. As these memories unfold, the supes realize the repercussions of their past actions and question how they can reclaim their powers and heroism while facing off against God U and Dean Shetty. Eventually, they convince Cate to confront her past and wake up. However, tensions arise when Sam and Emma, who have clearly been intimate, confront Cate for keeping Sam's brother in darkness. The supes intervene to prevent a rash decision, and Emma's compassion ultimately leads Sam to believe that they are better than revenge. Meanwhile, Dean Shetty and Dr. Cardosa are working on a secret plan involving a virus that targets supes with Compound V in their blood. Shetty has gone rogue and wants to see if Cardosa can create a more potent virus. The experiment goes awry and a supe is killed. This sets up the climax of the season, as Shetty asks Cardosa if the virus can be made contagious. With Shetty's indifference towards supes and the stakes rising, the young superpowered heroes will fight for their lives, the livelihood of God U, and the safety of all supes. The stage is set for an intense season-one finale.
